Carpi is known for his nonconformist style, and his films often explore themes of social and political oppression. He gained critical acclaim for his 1972 film "The Working Class Goes to Heaven," which won the Cannes Film Festival's Grand Prix, and his 1986 film "Chronicle of a Death Foretold," which was based on the novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
